Design trends from Denmark: 10 products from 3 Days of Design
Jul 11, 2024
In June, the annual 3 Days of Design festival took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, and has grown into the largest and most important design event in the Nordic countries. Over the course of three days, both large and small design companies showcased their work and new releases to all interested attendees. ELKE Mööbel visited the event to explore trends and new products, picking out the most exciting ones.
Innovative materials and manufacturing technologies always capture attention. This is the case with Ferm Living's Dae floor lamp, which is made from a metal frame coated with polymer spray. Thanks to the material, the lamp's light is semi-translucent, soft, and diffused.
A new approach is also seen in New Work's Nebra pendant. The beautiful, poetic, and elegant textile shade of the Nebra is designed in a way that allows its shape to be adjusted. With a simple movement, the Nebra lamp can be transformed to direct its illumination either fully upwards, fully downwards, or equally in both directions.

Sustainability and environmental awareness are also key themes at the 3 Days of Design in Denmark. Italian manufacturer Arper's Catifa Carta chairs take this to a whole new level. The Catifa Carta seat is made from 29 layers of compressed kraft paper produced from wood waste. Despite this innovative approach, no compromises have been made in terms of design or quality. Since the Catifa Carta seat is fully natural, at the end of its life cycle, it can be converted into biochar through pyrolysis, which is ideal for enriching soil in agriculture.
The range of interior products presented covers a wide variety of designs, from the clean simplicity of Nordic style and Japandi aesthetics to playful colorfulness, roundness, softness, industrial elements, robustness, and more. One interesting find was Ferm Living's Burl massive coffee table, which stands out due to its material. Burl is made from wood where the knots and the patterns they create play a central role, adding a sense of softness to the piece.

HAY Barro ceramic tableware collection blends tradition and modernity. The pieces have a timeless and classic feel, yet HAY's signature color palette adds a fresh and contemporary twist to the series.
The new extendable Earnest table from Muuto is an example of timeless Scandinavian design and functional wooden furniture, with no unnecessary details. The solid wood table can be extended at both ends with additional leaves, and an interesting nuance is that the grain direction of the extensions runs perpendicular to the grain of the tabletop.

A great example of industrial design is the new, distinctive Set table lamp from Muuto. The upward-facing light reflects off the aluminum shade, providing a bright yet non-glaring illumination. The height of the lampshade is adjustable, which also changes the intensity of the light.

At 3 Days of Design, many manufacturers also showcased updates to existing product lines. One such example was the legendary striped Ferm Living Ripple glassware series, now available with a new matte frosted glass finish. This elegant update adds a subtle design nuance to the drinks served in the glasses. The new version is available for all products in the Ripple collection.

The blend of fashion and interior design always creates excitement. At 3 Days of Design, there was significant buzz around the collaboration between HAY and ASICS, where HAY refreshed the Japanese sports brand's 1994 Skyhand OG sneakers with new color combinations. In addition to the sneakers, socks in matching colors were also launched for sale.
